Hi this is Josh. This is a little short story I wrote. Hope you enjoy it.

Eagle
I don’t get it. I’m a nice girl. I mean I don’t look ugly or anything. But this is the fifth time this year a boy has turned me down.  “I don’t get it” I said close to tears.
“Why not?”.
Chris took a while to answer. “You’re not my type. I’m sorry” Chris said looking down.
“I understand” I said, untruthfully.
Chris walked past me down the main hall of our school. I turned around slowly and watched him walk. I continued staring long after he had actually left my sight. Standing there I was all alone. Why? I looked down with gloomy eyes and began to walk slowly down the same hall to my next class. It hurt inside me, always getting turned down like that. Would no boy love me? I’ve always wondered this. But when I really think about it I can’t really see me, Sally Abingdon, five years down the line with a family.
The bell rang loudly but I didn’t care. I kept walking in my slow pace. I didn’t care about being late for my next class. I mean if the teachers wanted to whine they could shove it up there arse.  There were huge crowds of people around me. Everyone was rushing to get to their next class. There were so many people I nearly fell over. Minutes passed and soon I was alone again. I began walking down the hall. I was so sad. I just wanted to cry. Of course I couldn’t cry at school. I’d look sissy. I broke into a sort of run and tears welled in my eyes. I ran passed classes and nature strips until. “oof!”
I fell over onto my butt. “ow!”  I complained.
I looked up to see who was there. It was my best friend, Rosey Athon. Rozan was her real name but all the kids called her Rosey, because of her red hair. She had beautiful brown eyes that I just loved. They seemed to sparkle in the sun light. Mine where like a vomit green. Yuk! “Rosey!” I exclaimed happily.
She looked down to see who she knocked over. “Eagle?”
Everyone called me Eagle. It was my nickname. I got it because I have great eyesight. I sit at the very back of the class in the dark spot in the room. But I can see the board as clear as if I was standing right in front of it, even if the writing was small. I also have 20/20 eyesight every time I get an eye test.

Rosey and I were walking across the oval to S+E. “It’s okay Eagle” Rosey said trying to cheer me up.
It was working. “That Chris is an idiot anyway. You’ll find someone. Don’t worry.”
“Thanks Rosey, you’re the best!” I said feeling a little better.
“Hang on, why are we on the oval for S+E?” I asked Rosey.
“We have an excursion to the bird park” she replied to me happily.
“C’mon” Rosey said starting to run.
I ran after her. We ran as fast as we could to the back of the oval where the school bus was. The last few kids were getting on. We ran so fast we nearly crashed into the bus. We got on at the last second and took a seat at the back. This excursion sounded fun. I loved birds especially eagles. Maybe that’s another reason for my nickname. It took the bus I while to start. The teachers were talking and so was everyone else. The mixed chatter confused my senses. Have you ever done that? Just sit and listen to everyone talking around you. I could hear faint words here and there, some laughs, but mostly it all didn’t make sense. I heard the bus engine start. And we were off.
The bus slowly wobbled on the chunky terrain of our school oval. It made its way through the gate and onto the road. I quietly peered out of the window, watching houses pass. It was a slow drive and there was really no way to pass the time. After a long while the bus pulled into the bird park’s car park. After making our way around the edge of the car park,  the bus came to a stop at the park’s entrance.
***
The students all began to stand as the frantically tried to get off the bus. I stood up but was knocked over by a stampede of boys. They really were the worst. After the mob of crazed boy’s and somewhat crazed girls had gotten off I was finally able to stand up. Gosh I don’t know what all the fuss is about. It’s not that exiting to get off a bus but everybody seemed to want to be the first to do it. I walked down the bus and got off.
The kids were in a large group near the entrance. The teachers were trying, with great difficulty, to get the kids into lines. Some organizing was done and the kids were in line. I joined the end of one. The lines were slow moving and I couldn’t find Rosey anywhere. Oh well. At least it wouldn’t be as boring as the bus was. The line was moving so slow it didn’t seem like it was moving but, eventually, I got through the entrance.
We were lead by the teachers to an area were bird handlers would get birds to do tricks for an audience. The show started at 12:30 and it was 12:25. At least I wouldn’t have to wait long for this. We were lead to a square area with a gate preventing entry. There was a bird handler and his bird clearly visible in the field. The man wore a glove were an eagle’s claws were tightly latched on. What a day I get to see eagles first. “Hey eagle” I heard Rob call.
Rob was Rosey’s boyfriend. He was about the only nice guy I knew. It’s annoying because all the good guys were either taken or gay. I walked over to where Rob and Rosey were standing. It’s funny how their names both start with r. “Hi guys” I said cheerfully.
“Where were you?” Rosey asked.
“I guess I got a bit lost” I said even though she ditched me.
“Look. The show’s starting” Rob pointed out.
I looked at the bird keeper. He threw a piece of meat in the air and the bird launched off his hand after it. the force pushed the keepers hand back. The eagle picked up speed as it got closer to the now falling piece of meat. Swoop! The eagle caught the piece of meat in its beak as it dived then it flew up and circled around in the air. It was incredible watching the birds fly. They were so beautiful I wished so much that I could be the bird handler.
***
I held on to that dream. The weekend after the school went to the bird park I went alone. I asked what it took to be a bird keeper. The guy there told me it’d take a lot of training and boy was it a lot. But I kept at it and now, 4 months later I go regularly to practise my bird handling skills.
I held my hand very still. There was an eagle on my glove and the birds still hadn’t taken a liking to me so I didn’t want it to fly away. “You’re getting better” Alex said.
Alex was my trainer. He has been training me the last couple of months but just now, since I’ve been coming more regularly, he let me hold one of the birds. Funnily yet awesomely enough I had got to hold an eagle, my favourite animal.
Suddenly the eagle took off. It surprised me so much I fell over. Alex began to chuckle. “Seems they still don’t like you though” he said.
I gave him a scowling look. “Would you mind helping me up”
“Ok” Alex said in between laughs
He held out his hand. I grabbed it and pulled myself up. “Eww!  My clothes are all dirty look!” I complained this just made Alex chuckle more.
“That’s enough for today. You’d better go get cleaned up” He said.
I left the field in a huff. Would it kill that Alex to be a gentle man once in a while. I mean he was 28. Aren’t old people supposed to be polite? I walked toward the gate holding out my dress and looking down at it. Since I wasn’t watching where I was going, I bumped into someone. “Sorry” I apologized, franticly.
I looked up to see a tall boy with curly blonde hair. He had gorgeous Green eyes and a kind of cute stubbly nose. “No I’m sorry I wasn’t watching where I was going” He said
There was an awkward silence for a moment then the boy tried to start up a conversation.
“So, do you like birds?” he asked.
“Yeah, how’d you know?”
“Well I saw you with them earlier. It looked like you really like them. I love birds” He said
“Really? I love birds too”
This was great not only was he cute but he was polite and he loves birds. This was totally my dream guy. “So um, may I ask your name?”
“It’s Sam” Sam replied “May I ask yours?”
“Yeah it’s Sally” I replied.
“Sally. That’s a nice name. It starts with S just like mine” Sam said.
“You know, Sally, You’re kind of cute” Sam said smiling at me.
“Um, really?” I asked
“Yeah” Sam replied “I think I like you” Sam said “Would you like to go out some time?”
“Of course I would” I replied.
